Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of nervousness and worry about something uncertain or a feeling of dread for anticipated events usually accompanied by nervous behavior like restlessness, lack of concentration or muscular tension. Feeling anxious is a normal emotion felt during stressful situations like before taking a test or making an important decision, but Anxiety Disorders are absolutely different causing such distress that interferes with your normal life. Such disorders can be referred to as a serious mental illness that needs to be treated.
There are various types of anxiety disorders. Apart from the generalized anxiety that refers to some uncontrolled or unreasonable worry and tension without any provocation, other anxiety disorders are some specific phobias or some social causes that result in the person behaving in an inappropriate manner. Such behavior often result in panic attacks like chest pain, sweating or irregular palpitations that occur suddenly or repeatedly without any warning. Usually there is no one cause for anxiety though it could be a combination of many factors like environmental stress or changes in the functions of the brain or some phobia in the form of an intense and unreasonable fear of some situation, object or activity.

Diagnosis & Treatment of Anxiety Disorder
The doctor diagnoses the illness based on the patient’s intensity and duration of symptoms. It is the doctor who determines the right treatment based on his evaluation of the type of anxiety disorder. Some of the therapies used in the treatment of anxiety disorder are:
- Oral Medication: Drugs like anti depressants, anticonvulsant medicines, antipsychotics and other anxiety reducing drugs are prescribed.
- Psychotherapy: is a type of counseling by which a trained mental health professional or a psychiatrist helps the patient through talk therapy using such strategies that will deal with the disorder.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: This is a special kind of psychotherapy where the thought patterns of the patient that lead to anxiety are recognized and a change is brought about again by counseling and talk therapy.
- Relaxation therapy, Lifestyle Changes and Dietary Changes also help in reducing anxiety to some extent.
